The Canadian National Crystallographic Committee will be hosting the first-ever Dr. Penelope W. Codding Lecture in support of early career crystallographers on Wednesday, the 14th of December, at 9 am Pacific time/Noon Eastern time.
Dr. Jenny Glusker, DSc will give the inaugural talk. Dr. Glusker was one of the pioneers in applying X-ray Crystallography to study biological molecules. As a PhD Student in the laboratory of Dorothy Hodgkin, she worked on determining the structure of the corrin ring of vitamin B12, for which Dr. Hodgkin was awarded the 1964 Nobel prize in Chemistry. She later spent time as a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Linus Pauling, then a recent Nobel Laureate himself. She was hired soon after by Lindo Patterson (who developed the Patterson Function) at the Institute for Cancer Research. She spent the rest of her career there examining the structures of numerous anti-tumour agents, carcinogens and enzymes. She is the author of several highly regarded textbooks on Crystallography, including Crystal Structure Analysis: A primer, and Crystal Structure Analysis for Chemists and Biologists.
